Mabulu
Mozambique’s inspirational marrabenta-hiphop collective Mabulu, having joined their country in celebrating 30 years of freedom from colonialism with a long Europewide tour showcasing stunning new pieces from their new 2005 CD release Outra Vez, are now invited to showcase at WOMEX 2006 in Sevilla, and have plans to re-visit Uk venues and festivals in 2007.
With their immaculate and incisive song arrangements and poised stage presence, Mabulu proudly pull today’s hiphop and ragga vocal acrobatics into the warm and sparkling embrace of Mozambique’s historic guitar-based marrabenta dance music tradition, to demonstrate just why they lead the way in the very current African Rap to the Roots movement.
Expect a vocal, and very mobile, 3-strong frontline presence featuring legendary Grand Old Man of marrabenta Dilon Djindji, new soul sister Xixen and conscious rapper Chiquito. The band’s glorious rumba-inflected rhythmic pulse comes from the diamond-sharp guitar interplay between father & son duo Xidimingwana & Bernardo, whilst bassist Edu and drummer Jorgito kick the beat.
'irresistible dance grooves, multiple languages, tenacious traditional music’ (New York Times)
